A trip to Wat Khao Kaew with Jack and Jill

A trip to Wat Khao Kaew with Jack and Jill

Last week, I had an opportunity to join a trip with Jack and Jill to Wat Khao Kaew in Ang Thong Province, to witness the sacred ceremony of making the first Kumarnthong (child images) of this temple.

Chaired by the Temple's abbot, Luang Poo Chuan, 84, who teaches the  principles of Luang Poo Yaem. The revered abbot has been dedicated to making Kumarnthong images for years.

We left Bangkok on Sept 9th at 5 p.m. by a double-deck VIP coach and it was jammed packed with passengers.

The trip consisted of mostly Thais and there were a few Malaysians who flew in for this ceremony. I considered myself lucky because  I didn't book my seat in advance and at the last minute I replaced someone who couldn't make it.

All went with the dual purpose of seeing the kumarnthong-making ceremony with their own eyes -- as well as worship the Kumarnthong badge "Thaweelarp 999" (Double Luck 999) home. Each costs 1,500 baht. Proceeds will go to  the temple for its good cause.

The friendly hosts, Jack and Jill (twin brother) welcomed the guests warmly and admitted that it was their first trip to arrange this get together for their website Fan Club.

Jack said, he already asked his kumarnthongs with a sweet at home to help to make sure there wouldn't be rain, or at least until after the ceremony is over. Surprisingly, there was no rain and it miraculously started pouring when we returned home. Wow! The driver was excellent and boxed dinner were served. When we passed half way, we were escorted by police who led us the way to the temple and arrived there at 7.30 p.m.

It was like a Temple Fair when we were there. The temple was decorated with colourful lights and villagers helped to cook rice and chicken curry and khao Tom Talay (porridge with mixed seafood). We all enjoyed it. The ceremony was attended by about  300 people.

With his smiling face, Luang Poo Chuan looked so kind and patient. "I couldn't believe he painted the three dots on all the guests' foreheads, one by one.   It  is believed to be good luck and shows no sign of tiredness."  Then, the ceremony began. Monks continued chanting for two hours until 11 p.m. and the ceremony then ended.

In the end, everyone worshipped and wanted to bring the  kumarnthongs home. Some took up to  10 and I heard someone from Malaysia wanted to have 50 kumarnthongs! One of the Malaysian guests, Emmie who has a wedding shop in Penang told me, "I knew about Kumarnthong from my sister-in-law from Chiang Rai. She married my brother and lives in Penang now. She collects many kumarnthongs and wanted to share her luck with me. This is our third trip to Bkk. Since I had them, my business has improved greatly and many miracles have happened in my life. It's really super!!

This time, I plan to bring 50 images to my family members and friends. They are so excited to have them." Another guest,  Ratchatabodin Sakulkantayanmunee, a well-known fortune teller at JJ Mall commented, "I have collected Kumarnthongs from many temples and they help a lot. I have more customers, and the customers have become my good friends. Never try... never know."

Jack and Jill shared their experiences of having kumarnthongs for more than 10 years -- and now they have about 1,300 images nationwide in their collection. They told us how their lives have changed and became better and better. From their experience, Jack said, his kumarnthong is good to help find  parking in congested parking lots like Mah Boon Krong, Central Lard Prao -- which was amazing!!

"Once I was with my friend and I told my Kumarnthong, which I took along, "Son, don't make me lose my face, please find a parking space for dad. Suddenly, one car backed out of a space and I got it!"

"Many times, they help my cosmetics business to reach their sales target. It's like a miracle because it's been a poor month but finally we made it -- like they sent rich customers to us unexpectedly,"  added Jill.

Jack revealed, "After we were on Tee Sib TV show recently, many people came to see us and wanted to worship our Kumarnthongs,  I have to disappoint them because we love our images and we don't want to sell them. The more you are with them, the more you don't want to give them away...they are really like your children.

"So, the guests turned out by challenging our kumarnthongs instead and many got their wishes. They came back with Nam Daeng like Fanta and Hales Blue Boy in many boxes plus many kinds of sweets. This made me and my staff gain weight because there are more than enough.

"Please don't buy so many things....just a small thing if they make your wish come true ...it's enough."  We all enjoyed the trip and we arrived back in Bangkok at 2 a.m.

Though it was quite late, it was so worth the trip and we all are looking forward to the next trip in October or November. Keep up the good work Jack and Jill --  and rock on...good luck!

How about yourself, did you 'adopt' any kuman kids from this trip?

Dear MP,

Yes, I worshipped 2 kumarnthongs home and I name them: Somwang and Som Jai Nuek. Now I have about  20 in my collection. The sizes are varied: 1\\\\\"-5\\\\\" and I love them all. So far no miracle yet but I take good care of them.

I see, as I don't get to see many Eng input here... Do you mind me asking are you a Thai abroad or foreign in Thailand?

Tonya S

Dear MP,

Thks for your question. I'm thai, born and brought up here. I can read and write Thai  fluently but the problem is I didn't learn how to type in Thai...most of the time I use English. It's 100 times faster. So, I welcome all the comments in Thai...no problem. I have to go upcountry...gotta go now. Talk soon!

nui-yut-ya

Good to see English comment. Have you ever spoken about Kuman with  any foreigner? What do they think about them?  I know it is just a stupid question but I just want to know....(\\\'.\\\')...........

yeah0no

Exciting..... this is the only post in Eng ever since i join this web forum.

I know that MP and J can speak Eng (i saw a short messages between them in Eng ). I'm Lao living in Vientiane (hope you guys don't mind talking to a Lao guy), i've been intrested about Kumanthong long ago more than ten years, but i have no idea whre to get them from and a bit scared and hesitate to get them as well, because i don't know much information how to look after. now it seems to be a lot of information over the books and especially on websites sinve Jack & Jill was on the TV show (AT10).

Well, a bit too long, some other people may not really like to read Eng post, so i better stop here

P.S. i can read and understand Thai quite well, but cannot write properly, it will take me more than half an hour to type a short message (as i have to check the spelling on my Thai dictionary

Thai in Thailand, typing English... very interesting

k. nui-yut-ya most foreigners (except asian) are still feel rather skeptic towards the concept of 'keeping' something supernatural.

'eye' yeah0no : don't worry, they can skip to another topic if Eng. is too boring! ;-)

I like Lao I find the language very pleasant and sincere, infact I'm planning a visit there soon!! Any place you recommend?

yeah0no

hi MP, yes there are many places you can visit, depends on what kind of things you want to see. maybe Luang Prabang province for your first trip, you now can fly there with Thai Airway.

I think we can talk a bit more thru email or msn, souliya@live.com

Dear YeahOno,

Sorry for a late reply coz I just came back from upcountry. Surprised to learn that you have been interested in Kumarnthong for more than 10 yrs but so far you haven't owned the image yet.

Yes, in the Jack and Jill Book, they recommended 10 temples that you can trust. My suggestion is start from there. The best is to go to the temple yourself and worship the image from the monk. Avoid taking from vendors outside bec they might be fake.

In Oct or Nov this year,  Jack and Jill will take us to a temple in Petchaboon. You can leave your email and I will keep you posted.

Dear K Nui-yut-ya,

RE: Have I had a chance to tell foreigners about Kumarnthong? So far I told my best friend in Johannnesburg, South Africa (she is an American living there). From my experiences, she said it's quite interesting and amazing!

I also put the pix of my Kumarnthongs in Facebook and only a few feedback. I think Kumarnthong appeals more to Asian people than westerners, don't you think so?
